LAMBRA District Criterium Championship

Rhino Rhenovators Contraband Days Criterium Championship

On Sunday, May 1, 2011 Rhino Racing will be hosting the LAMBRA District Criterium Championship in downtown Lake Charles, LA. The races are co-sponsored by Midsouth Masters. There will be a $3000 prize purse plus primes as well as double series points.

Visit our website and view the race flyer:

Online registration is open and you can pre-register here: until Friday, April 29 at midnight. Race day registration will also be available beginning at 7:00 am on race day up to 30 minutes before the start of each race.

The races are being held in conjunction with the annual Lake Charles Contraband Days Festival. They are going to get plenty of regional advertising and part of the race course is on the Lake Charles Civic Center property where the festival is held so expect there to be lots of spectators. The balcony and steps in front of the Civic Center will be a great place to watch the races.

If you have never been to Contraband Days, it is one of the largest festivals in the state and this is its 54th year. You may be interested in bringing your family to enjoy some of the other events at the festival as well. You can learn more here:

One event in particular we recommend is the Tour Lafitte Bicycle Ride on Saturday, April 30. It is the 21st year for this charity ride that attracts approximately 500 hundred participants annually. Details can be found here:

The Howard Johnson Hotel located at 825 Broad Street will have rooms at a discounted rate. Just mention you are with the bike race. The phone number is 337-436-4311. It's located just a few blocks east of the race course.

We are looking forward to seeing all of you.

2nd Annual Velo Louisiane Bicycle Festival

Please join us for the 2nd Annual Velo Louisiane Bicycle Festival Weekend. Your participation, and family and friends would be most welcome. The main event in Baton Rouge is Sunday, April 10th, noon to 6 pm, at Perkins Road Community Park. This free, family- friendly festival is hosted by Baton Rouge Advocates for Safe Streets (BRASS) and the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC). Sunday activities feature a variety of fun competitions, bicycle-related demonstrations, children's activities and contests, displays, raffles, a bike parade, and more!
Velo Louisiane Weekend rolls out April 9th, Saturday morning, with Mayor Holden's Annual Family Fun Ride. Scheduled activities continue at various locations through Saturday evening; and Sunday morning events lead into the main festival at 12:00, noon.

Schedules, locations, and details for Velo Louisiane are listed at: [links in Yahoo may need to be copied into your browser]

Last year's festival in Baton Rouge was attended by nearly 1,000 citizens, and helped to publicize important considerations of bicycle safety and motorist awareness while being fun, engaging, and entertaining. Since 2010, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of cyclists on our streets; whether for sport, exercise, or basic transportation. Research indicates the more that people bicycle on our streets and roadways, the safer bicycling becomes. This effect carries over to greater safety for motorists and pedestrians as well.

Press Release for 2nd Annual Velo Louisiane Bicycle Festival Weekend is available at:

Mayor-President Holden will make a presentation of his proclamation

This Wednesday, March 23, 4 PM, Mayor-President Holden will make a presentation of his proclamation of April as Bicycle Month in East Baton Rouge Parish. Mayor-President Holden's announcement will take place in the Metropolitan Council chambers in the City Government Building, 3rd Floor, east side, 222 St Louis Street, downtown.

We would like to have as many bicyclists present as is possible so come on down and pack the Chamber! The Mayor's presentation will immediately precede the Metropolitan Council meeting and should only take a few minutes.

Be aware that on-going construction of the new Town Square has closed St Louis Street at North Boulevard. The parking garage on St Louis remains accessible from St Louis. Street parking is possible but by no means guaranteed. Be sure to allow enough time to park and get to the Council Chambers by a little before 4 PM,

Tour Du Rouge

Every year in May the Red Cross holds a cycling event to raise money called Tour Du Rouge. It is a six-day cycling race from Houston to New Orleans. Right now, we are trying to get participants for the last day of the race, from Galveston to New Orleans. I know that you have a lot of contacts who are runners, but I was wondering if you knew of any cyclists who would be interested in participating. I figured it may be a long shot, but it was worth a try. We are trying to get as many participants as possible for that last day! If you have any contacts that may be able to help me, then I can get you more information today.

Thank you so much,
