TRAINED CYCLISTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY

TRAINED CYCLISTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDY

Hi! My name is Helena Rietschier and I am a Master's student in the Exercise Physiology department at LSU. We're conducting a cycling study to investigate the effectiveness of a natural carbohydrate source (sun-dried raisins) versus sports jelly beans on promoting endurance performance. The study will involve you cycling on your own bicycle mounted on a Computrainer in our lab. There will be a VO2 max test, a lactate threshold test, and 3 experimental trials in which you will cycle for 2 hours followed by a 10-km time trial. Every 20 minutes during the 2 hour cycling bout, you will receive either sun-dried raisins, sport jelly beans, or water-only. For more information, please contact me (hriets1@lsu.edu). Thanks!!

➢ Male and female cyclists/triathletes needed for research study comparing the effectiveness of a natural carbohydrate source (sun-dried raisins) versus sports jelly beans on promoting endurance performance

➢ Cycle on your own bicycle mounted on a CompuTrainer

➢ You may qualify if you are between the ages of 18-35 and have no history of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or peanut allergies

Photographer at training race

Everyone,

There will be a photographer for 225 magazine at the split today and Thursday taking pictures of the training race for a story the magazine is doing on cycling on Baton Rouge. He also plans to take some pictures from his vehicle as we ride around the loop.

Please make every effort to make it to the training race today and Thursday so we can have as big a group as possible for the picture. Also, for you guys starting from the split, please try to join the training race for a little while before and as we go through the split to make the group bigger.

If you are on a race team, it's probably a good week to wear your kit to get your sponsors some press.

Thanks

Dustin Flint

Stewart's Seafood & Steak House
Corner LA 16 & LA 450, Franklinton, LA
"Cucumber Corner"

Registration begins at 6:45 am
Ride starts at 7:30 am

Ride lengths:

Century 100 mi Half Century 50 mi
Metric Century 63 mi Quarter Century 25 mi

Last year we tried out a new starting location and completely new set of routes for our annual fall century ride. The new location received very favorable reviews from riders so we are returning there this year. Registration and the after-ride party will take place at Stewart's Seafood & Steakhouse which is on the corner of LA 16 & LA 450 near Franklinton in Washington Parish. This location is commonly known as "Cucumber Corner."
All four of the century routes will be on quiet, scenic, rolling to hilly roads of western Washington Parish and northeastern Tangipahoa Parish. Route maps and road markings will point the way, and helpful volunteers at strategically placed rest stops will stand ready with cool water and tasty snacks. Once back at Stewarts Seafood, you will enjoy a hearty post-ride meal with beer and soft drinks.
While the century is designed to be an enjoyable experience, the event is held on public roads open to other vehicles. Riders should expect to encounter motorists and be prepared for road hazards. Participants should operate their bicycles in a safe and lawful manner and obey traffic laws throughout the ride. The CCC requires the use of ANSI or Snell approved helmets for all club rides including the century. Everyone is encouraged to ride with a partner; children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration

The registration fee for the Crescent City Century is $35. You may register online at active.com, or at http://www.crescentcitycyclists.org/online_century_reg.html . The century fee includes SAG support, restroom facilities at the start, maps, road surface markings, and lunch with beer and soda following the ride.
All pre-registered riders will receive a free Polar brand insulated water bottle with Crescent City Cyclists logo. Water bottles will not be provided for day of event registrations. To receive a water bottle, your pre-registration must be postmarked by Saturday, September 12, 2009. All registrants will pay $35 on the day of the century. Non-members may join CCC and save $5 on their century fee by submitting a membership application and dues ($18/yr individual, $25/yr family) along with their century pre-registration.

Please note:

The century will be limited to 500 riders. To be sure you are able to ride, please send in your registration as soon as possible.

This is a "rain or shine" event; not much short of a hurricane bearing down on us will force a postponement. If the unthinkable should happen be sure to call the CCC Hotline (888-901-9581) for rescheduling information.
Please fill out the registration form and mail it in with your registration fee while you are thinking about it. Or you can register on our website: www.crescentcitycyclists.org.
If you have any questions, e-mail century@CrescentCityCyclists.org or call Joe Berthelot at 504-469-7900.

Online registration is available at www.active.com. For printable registration forms, click here.

Below is a brief history of the Louisiana State Parks that are hosting this ride:

Centenary State Historic Site (East College and Pine Street in Jackson) - This is the former site of Centenary College. Visitors may tour the old West Wing dormitory or a professor's cottage, and learn about the history of education in Louisiana. A Confederate cemetery is located on the grounds. Originally opened as the College of Louisiana in 1826, the school occupied an old courthouse and other buildings in the town of Jackson. The college steadily grew and two dormitories were built on new property in 1832 and 1837. The West Wing, the latter of these two buildings, remains today.

Audubon State Historic Site (South of St. Francisville on LA 965) - The nearly 200-year-old Oakley House is where John James Audubon drew inspiration and sketched many of the birds found in his famous Birds of America. The visitor may tour the house-turned-museum, formal gardens, an outside kitchen building and barns, walk the trails and enjoy a picnic lunch at the large pavilion nearby. This lush natural setting, with a variety of birds singing throughout the 100-acre forest, still inspires visitors. In these peaceful environs, it is easy to imagine the artist filling his sketch pad with notes and drawings for his famous series of bird illustrations.

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site (In St. Francisville on La. Hwy. 10) - Built during the 1830s, Rosedown had one of the largest private gardens in the U.S. in the 19th century. Daniel and Martha Turnbull began construction on the main house at Rosedown in 1834, completing it by May the following year. The home was furnished with the finest pieces available, most imported from the North and from Europe. In addition to the gardens and many original structures, visitors can see many furnishings and items that the Turnbulls themselves brought into the main house. Rosedown Plantation is located in the West Feliciana Parish community of St. Francisville along one of the most historic corridors in South Louisiana. The historic presence of the River created deep soil deposits to form uplands that became, in the days of the cotton boom, extremely productive and valuable. In addition to the natural flats, creeks draining to the River created some expanses of rugged, heavily tr!
eed terrain that became profitable as timberland.

Port Hudson State Historic Site (US 61, 30 minutes north of Baton Rouge) - This 909-acre site encompasses part of the Port Hudson Battlefield Civil War Site. Featured are six miles of hiking trails, 1 and 1/2 miles of trenches, a museum and interpretive programs. Fort Desperate, a primary Confederate position, is accessible by a concrete walkway and elevated wooden boardwalks. (The ride will not visit this site, but the members of this site will do a cannon demonstration at 11:30 a.m. at Centenary College)

Guru Bicycles star "Viktor Zyemtsev" Wins Ironman Louisville, KY

http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20090830/SPORTS/908300359/1002/sports/Men+s+Ironman+comes+down+to+one+late+rally

Great news: Viktor Zyemtsev beat out some tough competitors yesterday to win IM Louisville in record time. Once again, the custom Crono makes a difference during and after the ride: he ran an impressive 2:43:49 marathon after putting in a smooth, top 5 bike leg. Proof once again that a Guru bike, first and foremost, is about precision serving performance.

We are happy to have Viktor on our side; the guy is a throw-back. Take a look at his last e-mail to us last week:

Hi Roberto!
I'll start IM Louiseville this weekend. I stiil don't have my race-suit from my sponsor. Can you send me a logo, that I can print off and iron on to my race-suit. I would buy special paper at Wal-Mart, to print the logo on to. Then use this paper to Iron on to my race suit. Do you think this would work?
Cencerely.
Viktor.

Priceless. We’re glad it worked, Viktor. Please join us in congratulating him.

Cheers,

Rob Rossi

p.s. Though you shouldn’t reproduce any of the photos featured on-line – we are working to buy-out an appropriate bike shot – feel free to spread the good news to your customers.
